	ONE'S LONESOME JOY

 I am truly delighted with the news of President Obama's re-election. And how could I not be?




 It is a message of peace and multiracial tolerance that the tenure of this bright man in the White House spreads around the globe. I give thanks to heaven for the millions of poor Americans who will live longer and healthier lives thanks to this President’s health reforms, and of course the retention of the many benefits which are available for the humbled American needy, Jews and non jews alike. 


And if he will eventually manage to reign in Israel's balloon-messiah Bibi Netanyaho with his rampaging frume tsudreite, so be it! Halevay, Omen. 


 


However, now more than ever, I am embarrased by the fact of life that my people the Charedim gravitate to right wing politics in a bizarre compulsive, almost selfless manner. It is so in Eretz Yisroel, in the USA,  and most annoying to me, here in the UK too. 


 


I for one, regard this phenomena as some tragic, nasty mutation of our recent cultural and moral evolvement (of which I dare not talk in much detail).


 


Otherwise, it is bewildering to comprehend, what on earth makes a solitary group of second or third generation destitute immigrants identify themselves with the agenda of the fat cat, declared despisers of the poor and the weak?! 


 


How else could one make sense of the fact that, the very people who pride themselves (by virtue or self delusion) on their communal commitment and mutual help, do habitually support those who come to hound their own poor, by stripping them of the benefits which keep them safe from homelessness and grinding poverty. 


 


I could not forget how dreadful I felt when a shmoina begodim young man spoke up in public for Netanyaho's sudden and total cut of benefits which exposed many tens of thousand of our very own Charedi children in Eretz Yisroel to wanton malnutrition. What made me really desperate was when the semi-literate know-it-all, countered my bewilderment with the familiar tough love sound bites of the blue collar Daily Mail reading folk.

Without the slightest disrespect to the truly noble and fine people involved, the idea of portioning the sea of the Talmud to defined daily portions, (precisely as the fifteenth century printers of Soncino paginated it (for their own practical reasons) and 'learning' a page on every single calendar day, with the aim of completing it over such and such period, sonds to me as to many before me, as something not right nor wrong, but somewhat sad.
